Pros

  • Excellent battery life
  • Very good performer

Cons

  • Not cheap
  • Heavy for an ultraportable

Bottom Line

Though pricey for a 12.5-inch laptop, this ultraportable delivers in performance and battery life.

dell latitude e6220 1163567 g1 Fast Corporate Ultraportable Laptop: Dell Latitude E6220 ReviewThough not particularly svelte or eye-catching, the Dell Latitude E6220 fits the bill perfectly for a corporate ultraportable laptop. It’s fast, it has state-of-the-art components, and it has the warranty and service options that large businesses expect. It also provides battery options that let you travel light or compute for nearly a day, depending on your need.

A 128GB Samsung solid-state drive combined with an Intel Core i5-2540M CPU and 4GB of system memory powered our test E6220 configuration to an impressive WorldBench 6 score of 132. Graphics work falls to the integrated Intel HD 3000 GPU, but the E6220 still managed smooth 1080p video playback, as well as frame rates between 30 and 40 frames per second in our low detail, low-resolution gaming tests.

The E6220 is also available with a Core i7-2620M and 8GB of memory if for some reason you need even faster performance. At just over $2000 (as of December 20,2011), our test unit is hardly entry-level; with the faster CPU and doubled memory, you’ll pay $2300 and change. A 256GB SSD is an option for an additional $350.

This laptop can run for quite a while isolated from wall sockets. In fact, if you add the optional bottom-mounted battery slice, you can increase the E6220′s run time from the “mere” 7 hours, 28 minutes that the internal battery provides to somewhere in the region of 20 hours. Of course, that fat bottom battery turns the normally 3.7-pound E6220 into a heavy little 5-pound rascal, but if you need the extra computing time, you need to accept that trade-off. The bottom slice also adds a nice forward rake to the unit, which helps when you’re typing.

The E6220 is more accurately described as sedately handsome rather than stunning. Put another way: You won’t get your head lopped off for showing up the boss’s laptop, but it still looks like you forked over more than just a couple of Benjamins for your machine.

Ergonomics, a far more important quality, are first class. Despite the small footprint of the E6220–with its 12.5-inch, 1366 by 768 display–I’d fully adjusted to the keyboard after only a few seconds. It has a nice little bounce to it that lets you quickly set up a typing rhythm. The touchpad and buttons are, in a word, smooth. The screen has a wide viewing angle and plenty of usable brightness.

We found little in the way of junkware to clutter up the Windows 7 Professional operating system our unit shipped with. The PC comes with a utility for the webcam plus Trend Micro’s Client/Server security software, and that’s about it. You can opt for lesser versions of Microsoft’s OS if you want to cut down on the price of the E6220. Most larger businesses and corporations will have their own productivity software and licenses, but you can add Microsoft Office 2010 Professional if you’d like–for the full price of $349.

Although lacking USB 3.0, the E6220′s ports and connections are otherwise state-of-the-art. You’ll find a combo eSATA/USB 2.0 port and two USB 2.0 ports, as well as both VGA and HDMI ports to handle any type of external display or projector you encounter. Bluetooth is available ($20 and present on our test unit), and Dell offers options for 802.11a/b/g/n. Ethernet is gigabit, and the laptop includes an ExpressCard slot for legacy devices. A headphone jack and dual-array microphones sit next to the 1280 by 720 Webcam for voice input.

As part of Dell’s Latitude line, the E6220 sports a standard three-year warranty, and the model is promised to be available for 18 months, with parts available for quite a bit longer. You’ll also get around-the-clock telephone support–and to be honest, you’ll be treated better than if you’d purchased a box-store unit.

The Dell Latitude E6220 is a great performer with good battery life and all the support and warranty options necessary for a fleet rollout. It’s sturdily constructed, it’s up to snuff technology-wise, and overall it’s a well designed and well conceived business laptop.

5 Things Journalists Ought to Know About Tablets

5 Things Journalists Ought to Know About Tablets

Apple iPad in man s hand jpg 300x168 5 Things Journalists Ought to Know About TabletsJournalists and photographers need to rethink how they package – and how they get paid for – their work when it comes to tablet computers. Tablets, predicted to become the reading device of choice in the next few years, will change the demand and market for information.

Those are some of the takeaways from a “Hacks and Hackers” meetup held at Storify headquarters in San Francisco called, “New rules of storytelling: The rise of tablets.”

Talking about the burgeoning demand for touchscreen-friendly information were John Knight, a co-founder and editor of Closed Mondays, whose recent tablet projects include Al Gore’s “Our Choice” and Tim Ferriss’s “4-Hour Chef.”

Here are five more points worth touching on for journalists and photographers when it comes to tablet publishing.

1. There’s No Money in Tablet Publishing – Yet

Once Magazine, launched in September, has a revenue sharing model that will hopefully pay journalists and photographers decent rates for their work. Readers currently pay $2.99 for each edition. When answering a question from the audience about whether tablet publishing provides a decent paycheck, Once‘s Knight said, “No! Just kidding. Sometimes. Well, it could… If we have 20,000 subscribers, it would be decent paycheck. I mean, if we could pay $2,500 for the photos and $1 a word, that would be decent. First, you have to establish yourself. The onus right now is on contributors to market… There’s not a market for us right now any more than there is for contributors.”

2. Your News Organization Is Interested in Them

Back in January, Forrester research predicted that U.S. consumers would buy more tablets than computers by 2015.

In addition to launching hundreds of dedicated apps, news organizations have heeded the call to create content consumable on tablet computers with initiatives ranging from Rupert Murdoch’s iPad-only publication The Dailyto a Philadelphia media group subsidizing tablets for readers. The result? The Economist recently reached100,000 subscribers for its iPad version.

3. Tablet Publishing Isn’t Necessarily About Interactivity or Extreme Stories

tablet dslr 5 Things Journalists Ought to Know About Tablets

Once‘s format doesn’t allow readers to pinch and zoom on photos, for example. “That’s how it was shot and this is how you look at it,” Knight said. He added that the photos are carefully chosen and crafted, and that the reader isn’t the professional, plus it’s more work for the publisher. One of Once‘s more popular stories, Knight said, isn’t “war photography, but a story about a retirement community in Arizona.” The photos chronicle the daily activities of the over-55 members from gymnastics to crocheting.

4. Tablet Publishing May Reverse the Traditional Text-to-Photo Ratio

Once magazine publishes three stories per edition, each story contains 15-20 photos accompanied by 800 words of text, the opposite of your usual word-heavy glossy magazine where two or three pics accompany 10,000 words of copy.

5. Get Ready for the “Bookification” of Content

Rymill’s latest project is the “4-hour Chef,” specifically made for the Kindle Fire. The free app, designed for first-time tablet users, gives a “taste” of the forthcoming Tim Ferriss book of the same title. Launched right after Thanksgiving, it’s a combo cookbook, diet and exercise regime that promises to get readers into fighting shape before the expansive Christmas holidays.

Apple iOS 5.0.1 Software Update , Fix iOS 5 Battery Issues

newsfdiOS5 300x214 Apple iOS 5.0.1 Software Update , Fix iOS 5 Battery Issues

Remember those frustrating iOS 5 battery issues? It looks like they’re about to be a thing of the past, as Apple has just released an update to its iOS mobile operating system, iOS 5.0.1, designed to fix the problem. The software update includes a few of other tweaks, too, including bug fixes for document syncing via iCloud, the addition of multi-tasking gestures for iPad 1 and improved voice recognition for Australian users.

After customer complaints filled Apple’s Support Forums, the company admitted to finding “a few bugs that are affecting battery life” and promised an update shortly. It was difficult to pinpoint the cause of the battery drains, with a number of suspected culprits being called out, including a calendar bug, a time zone bug and issues with iOS 5′s location services.

Ahead of its original estimate, Apple released iOS 5.0.1 to users this morning. It’s the first update to the latest version of its mobile operating system, and one that promises to fix bugs that gave users poor battery life on their devices.

The updates comes a little more than a week after Apple first acknowledged that some users were, in fact, running into problems with battery life after upgrading to the newer version of iOS. In conjunction with that, the company released a beta version of the software for developers to test. A second beta of that software arrived a day and a half later.

Apple has not copped to any specific reason as to why some users were experiencing shorter than usual battery life as part of iOS 5. Originally it was believed to be related to some of the hardware changes with the iPhone 4S, including a move to a dual-core processor, though someiPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 users were experiencing issues as well.

There’s no telling how much of an improvement to battery life the fix will bring. Initial reports from users of the beta have been positive, with one going so far as to call it “nothing short of amazing.”

Besides tackling the battery life issue, one of iOS 5.0.1′s headlining features is that it brings multitasking gestures to original iPad owners. The feature lets iPad users take advantage of multi-finger gestures to navigate between apps, and access certain features–notably pinching together the screen to go back to the home screen. Apple originally included the feature in an earlier developer beta, though removed it entirely in the final version of the software that went out to users with the first-generation iPad.

The update also fixes a security issue with Apple’s Smart Cover for the iPad 2 that would let users gain access to whatever app the owner of that device was running, even if they didn’t know that user’s lockscreen password. That bug was discovered late last month, after iOS 5 was released.

Other fixes include a bug with documents in Apple’s iCloud service, and improvements to voice recognition accuracy for Australian users using Apple’s dictation feature on the iPhone 4S.

The new software is available as a free update through iTunes. This is also the first time users get to try out Apple’s built-in updating feature that’s new to iOS 5.

Not included in the update are two recently discovered, though for now inaccessible iOS features. They include a panorama mode in Apple’s camera application that’s able to take panoramic shots by sweeping the camera side to side, as well as a new auto-correct menu in the keyboard. Both of those features are tucked away within the depths of the software, but were pulled out by developers this week.

Privacy 300x199 Keep Your Laptop Computer Safe and FunctionalToday, I’ll give you some tips on how to keep your laptop computer safe. Using your laptop safely will help it work properly.

Prevent Laptops From Overheating

It is best to shut your laptop down when it is not in use for a long period of time. This prevents overheating.

Adjust Laptop Power Settings

Adjusting your power settings can help prevent overheating if your laptop is not in use, even for a short period of time. Power Settings are found in the Control Panel on Basic PCs, or System Preferences on the Mac. When you open up Power Options on your PC , or Energy Saver on your Mac, you will find options that allow you to control the timing of the monitor, standby, and hibernation settings.

The shorter the amount of time it takes for your monitor to turn off, your computer to go into standby or hibernation, the more energy your computer will save. For example, I will adjust my settings to 5 minutes. This way, after 5 minutes, my computer will automatically begin to use less energy. On PCs, click OK when you are done adjusting the settings.

Clean Laptop Vents and Fans

You can also prevent overheating by inspecting and cleaning the various air vents and fans with forced air dusters, which you can buy at any office supply store. This should be done when the computer has been off for at least a few minutes. The fans and vents are located at the bottom and sides of your laptop. Make sure to blow the air out of the vents.

Proper Laptop Ventilation

It is best to use a laptop on a hard surface, like a desk, which allows ventilation. Avoid placing your laptop on soft spots like a couch or pillow. This could block airflow, which can cause overheating. You can also purchase an optional heat sink base or a laptop desk at office supply stores.

Tips for Traveling With Laptops

If you are traveling, turn off your computer before putting it into its carrying bag. Also, unplug any computer accessories, such as flash drives, when you’re traveling with your laptop. They can scratch, break, or damage your laptop while traveling.

Top Ten Tips to Reduce iPhone 4S Battery Problems, Improve Bugs in Apple Software

Apple users have been complaining about battery problems on the new iPhone 4S, noting rapid battery drain and other glitches in the new iOS 5 software.

177307 iphone 4s siri Top Ten Tips to Reduce iPhone 4S Battery Problems, Improve Bugs in Apple Software

A flaw in Apple’s location services system seems to be the main source of blame. The “Setting Time Zone” option of “Systems Services,” which is found under the “Location Services” menu option, seems to be on and running all the time, even when there’s no chance that users have moved to a different time zone or even a new location.

Constantly seeking the iPhone 4S’s location is a huge drain on the smartphone’s battery, because the software performing that function uses a combination of technologies — Wi-Fi, mobile mass data (which compares the strength of signals from the three nearest phone masts and then triangulates them), and GPS sensor input — to determine the user’s correct time zone, according to The Guardian.

Oliver Haslam of iDownloadBlog suggests that the iOS 5′s GM release introduced a bug into the system. “Switching [the 'Setting Time Zone' function] off may mean that your iPhone will no longer set its own time zone when you travel,” Haslam said, “but that’s a small price to pay for having your iPhone last more than 12 hours on a full charge.”

Haslam believes the time zone issue is the primary reason for the iPhone 4S’s battery problems. “We have tested this method on four  different iPhone 4S handsets, including an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 3GS,” Haslam said. “All have reported drastically improved battery life after switching ‘Setting Time Zone’ off.”

Some other commenters, however, say that switching off location and time zone settings make little difference, and that the iPhone 4S battery problems cannot be solved with this measure alone. Discussions on Apple’s support boards offer many tips to improve battery life, including multiple tested theories on what could be draining the iOS 5 battery so rapidly. Users are reporting iPhone 4S and iOS 5 devices getting very warm, while others report half the previous run-time on their phones even with the device on standby.

Apple has not made any official comment on the iPhone 4S battery problems. In the meantime however, here are the top ten tips from the Apple support boards on how to improve battery life and stop so many system bugs in the new iOS 5 software. Hopefully, these tips will help stop batteries from draining so rapidly as Apple works to solve problem with the bugs in its new mobile OS.

Top Ten Tips to Reduce iPhone 4S Battery Problems:

iphone 4 vs 4s 625x297 Top Ten Tips to Reduce iPhone 4S Battery Problems, Improve Bugs in Apple Software

1. Turn Off “Setting Time Zone”

Go to Settings -> Location Services -> System Services. Click the option to turn off “Time Zone Settings.” Once you’ve turned it off, your battery life may improve by as much as 40%.

2. Turn Off Wi-Fi

Another big drain on iPhone 4S batteries is wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) technology. With Wi-Fi on constantly, battery life is always being drained. Go to Settings and turn off the Wi-Fi option, and battery life should improve by up to 25%.

3. Turn Off All The Location Services

Things like “Find My Friends,” “Find My iPhone,” and the battery-sucking Siri app all use location-based services. Head over to Settings -> Location Services and turn off anything you don’t regularly use.

4. Switch From Vibration Setting

You would think having your phone on “vibrate” might save battery power, since you’re not having the Apple product use the ringer. Instead, vibrating your phone can sometimes drain the battery faster, especially if you use it for other things as well. To turn off the vibration, go to Settings -> Sounds.

5. Set Brightness Level at Medium or Low, Not Auto or High

Keeping your iPhone 4S brightness on “Auto” means that when it’s dark, your screen automatically increases its brightness, which drains the battery and can lead to more long-term battery problems. Keep brightness at medium or even low, and never set it on high.

6. Turn Notifications Off

Notifications are one of the best and most convenient things about the iPhone 4S and iOS 5, but it costs users a lot of battery power. Turning off your push notifications — or all of your notifications — will save you some battery life in the short term and in the long run. Go to Settings -> Notifications, and click Off for any unneeded app notifications on your Apple product.

7. Turn Off iCloud

Doing this means you’ll lose all the iCloud features that come with iOS 5, but it will save you a lot of battery by disabling all of the syncing features that iCloud uses on iOS 5. Go to Settings -> iCloud -> Documents & Data, and change Use Cellular to Off.

8. Turn Diagnostics and Usage Reports Off

If you have enabled diagnostics and are still experiencing battery loss, stop sending Apple your information. Sending out that much data will drain battery life, and lead to more battery problems for your iPhone 4S. To disable diagnostics and usage reports, go to Settings -> General -> About -> Diagnostics & Usage, and click Don’t Send.

9. Disable Bluetooth.

Like Vibrations and Brightness, this is a setting you don’t think will affect your battery power as much as it does. To turn it off, go to Settings -> General -> Bluetooth -> Off.

10. Complete Restore

If all the above tips aren’t helping you, you may have to fix your battery problems by resetting Network Settings on your iPhone 4S or iOS 5. Be sure to save all information beforehand, because restoring it to factory settings will erase passwords, VPN, and APN settings, as well as any information you’ve saved. Go to Settings -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings to restore your Apple device.
