The TF201 Fits into this Dock’s Rotating Hinge

Like its predecessor, the Transformer TF101, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime TF201 tablet is named for its ability to plug into a keyboard dock accessory and become a laptop-like device. Since the Transformer Prime TF201 Mobile Docking Station ($150 as of March 7, 2012) is similar to the original Transformer TF101 dock in many ways, my impressions of the two docks are similar.

Just as with the original Transformer dock, the TF201 fits into this dock’s rotating hinge, connecting through a 40-pin dock connector. You slide a release latch to secure the slate. Here, however, I encountered the same problem as I did with the original dock: Despite the various pieces holding the tablet in place, it still had room to wobble, most notably when I folded it down over the Hp 510 Battery keyboard.

116526386 The TF201 Fits into this Docks Rotating Hinge

This keyboard dock adds 1.2 pounds and just 0.4 inch to the Transformer Prime. Unlike the original Transformer–which bulks up to the size of an average netbook with its dock–the Transformer Prime remains under an inch thick at only 0.75 inch with its dock attached. And you can still take it off when you don’t need it, leaving you with a very slim and sleek tablet. When it’s time to return to your business reports, you simply plug the keyboard back in. The whole thing folds together neatly, too, a design advantage for when you’re transporting the keyboard/tablet combo or pulling it out of your bag for your journey through airport security, for instance.

Another major advantage of the laptop-like hinge: Since it holds the tablet up, you don’t need to invest in separate stands or folding cases. And the hinge rotates down as you lift the tablet “open,” which raises the keyboard to a nice angle for typing, and produces a surprisingly well-balanced result. Usually a setup like this, with all the “guts” in the screen, becomes top-heavy and easy to tip over, but the Transformer Prime stayed firmly in place, even as I pushed it back a good ways.

Regrettably, as on the original Transformer dock, typing on the Transformer Prime dock is a mixed bag. Just like the keys on the TF101 dock, as well as on Asus netbooks, the island-style keys here are small and cramped. They’re functional, but they aren’t as comfortable to type on next to those of the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet Keyboard Folio Case; I had to do a lot more shifting of my hands to accommodate the Toshiba pa3534u-1brs battery spacing. You could get accustomed to the feel over time, but it isn’t comfortable from the start. (I have to note, though, that a colleague with similarly small hands had fewer issues adapting, so your experience may vary.) I also found an alarming amount of flex in the keyboard deck, something I didn’t expect judging from the solid metal build of the rest of the device.

On the positive side, the feedback is good, neither too mushy nor too springy. Once you get used to the spacing, typing on this dock could be described as workable. When you consider the good-enough typing along with all the other benefits of this keyboard dock, you can see that it’s a valuable add-on for the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime TF201.

If you’re among the lucky ones to receive a new PC this holiday season, rejoice. There are few things as exciting as the potential of a brand-new machine.

images 11 6 Free Software Packages You Should to Load on Your New PCAssuming it’s not a Mac–or a machine with Linux preloaded–Windows almost certainly came installed on your device. If you’re a Windows fan, that’s great–you’re all set for an operating system, then. If not, the hard part is choosing what to install instead.

In any case, the world of free and open source software has you covered, both for an operating system and for just about any other software you might need. Where to begin? Here are six suggestions.

1. Ubuntu Linux or Linux Mint

If you’re not crazy about Microsoft Windows, or if you’d like to have an alternative on hand, there are countless Linux options you could try.

Among the two most popular, though–and the ones most agree are best suited for new users–are Ubuntu Linux and Linux Mint.

Ubuntu, of course, was long the No. 1 Linux distribution out there, and rightfully so. It was the first to put Linux on the “map” with mainstream users, I’d argue, and it still offers a really nice, easy-to-use open source operating system. The latest version of Ubuntu is “Oneiric Ocelot,” or version 11.10, which can be downloaded for free from the Ubuntu site.

linux20mint 5234192 6 Free Software Packages You Should to Load on Your New PCLinux Mint, however, has recently usurped Ubuntu’s No. 1 spot, largely because of Canonical’s decision to begin using the Unity interface by default in Ubuntu. That’s been less than entirely popular with many longtime users, in particular, giving Mint a new boost.

Mint is a great distribution as well–also very focused on ease of use–and it gives users a number of choices for the desktop environment they want to use. So, for flexibility in your computing environment, you won’t go wrong with Mint.

There are, of course, numerous other Linux distributions as well. I’d say pick one and give it a try; if you don’t like what you see, it’s easy to switch.

2. Firefox or Chrome

Assuming you have Windows, you probably have Internet Explorer as well. There are many reasons to consider installing something else, however–either in addition or instead of that browser–and Firefox and Chrome are the most obvious examples.

Chrome recently assumed the No. 2 spot in the browser market–displacing Mozilla Firefox–and it’s widely considered the most secure choice. Firefox, however, just got a really speedy update, and it’s designed with numerous ethical considerations in mind.

All in all you really can’t go wrong with either of those, and of course they’re both free.

Also made by Mozilla, Thunderbird is free, cross-platform e-mail client software that I’ve been using for years. It’s very easy to set up and customize, and it’s available in countless languages. Numerous extensions are available as well.

4. LibreOffice

It used to be OpenOffice.org that was the most commonly recommended free and open source office productivity suite, but over the past year or so LibreOffice has taken its place.

I use LibreOffice every day for my writing, and I can attest that it’s a great alternative to Microsoft Office and the other big competitors out there. Just like Office, it includes modules for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.

LibreOffice is free, it’s open source, it’s business-ready, and it does everything most people need. There are also lots of extensions that extend its capabilities even further.

5. GIMP

If you ever work with photos or other images, GIMP is a must-have alternative to Adobe’s expensive Photoshop software. GIMP is great for making Web graphics, creating marketing materials, and retouching product photos, and any images you create can be saved in numerous formats, including Photoshop. Once you try out GIMP’s high-end graphics editing and creation features, you’ll be amazed that it doesn’t cost anything.

6. ClamAV

Finally, whether you’re running Windows or not, it’s a good idea to have some sort of antivirus protection in place, and ClamAV is a great free choice. The popular cross-platform tool detects Trojans, viruses, malware, and more.

Google+’s Secret Weapon Versus Facebook and Twitter

Google+’s Secret Weapon Versus Facebook and Twitter

googleplus twitter facebook Google+’s Secret Weapon Versus Facebook and TwitterThe proliferation of platforms such as Facebook and Twitter come mostly from success stories, and cross-over events with mainstream media. Once CNN started using tweets during live broadcasts, the platform was cemented in our minds as a destination to discover topical trends and real-time conversation. Once Facebook became a strong piece of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, we knew that the social network bohemeth wasn’t going anywhere.

Google+ came along, a little bit late to the game. A lot late, actually. Google’s service has a thing or two up its sleeve, though.

One of those secret weapons is Daria Musk. A musician small in stature, with a powerful voice and a brilliant ability to make a guitar seemingly sing backup to that powerful voice of hers.

How can one person be a secret weapon that could move the masses to take a second or third look at Google+? Masterful use of supporting tools and features, and leveraging a platform that doesn’t pander solely to mainstream celebrities. Google+ is truly a platform where anyone who wants to work hard can succeed. Daria Musk is living proof of that.

The Tools

Google, and the Google+ team specifically, have methodically rolled out supporting features, that together revolutionize the way we interact online. Twitter gave us the 140 character brain dump, Facebook gave us the social graph, and Google+ has given us the action engine.

Daria Musk has amassed over 24,000 followers on Google+, using those tools. She released a song called “+1 Me” that catered to users of Google+.

Google Hangouts

Using the live video platform from Google+, Hangouts, Musk has been able to play hours of live music for an always changing audience. Consider what a musician has to do early on in their career to have even a handful of people listen to them play. Tours all over the U.S., uncomfortable dive bars, singing third and fourth in line to an opening act that nobody has ever heard of, and above all else, lack of money to pull all of this off.

Google Hangouts makes all of this free. Sure, its not the first live video platform, but its the first platform to have a social networking machine behind it. At any given moment of the day, Daria can play a “show” for hundreds of people over a period of an hour. Facebook has an integration with Skype, which only works for one-on-one conversations, and Twitter requires you to tweet out links to followers, with little hope that even a quarter of them will see it.

Photos, Videos, and More

With Google+, Daria Musk is able to share YouTube videos of her performances, share photos from when she did a live Hangout in Washington D.C., and more. The Google+ platform has an uncanny ability to let you embed everything into a stream, without it feeling out-of-place. When I use Facebook and someone pumps outside content into it, it seems like a nuisance to interact with it at times. Google+ has created a beautifully designed platform with all key features fully embedded and seamless.

Google Music

google music logo Google+’s Secret Weapon Versus Facebook and TwitterWith the announcement of Google Music, and more importantly Artists Hub, Musk now has a platform that she can feed her hard work and newfound following into and actually turn her passion and talents into a career.

Google+ Has A Long Way To Go

Google+ still has a long way to go. Since the company doesn’t have to figure out a business model for the platform anytime soon, the team can innovate and listen to its users needs. Twitter is at a crossroads where every feature they introduce has to somehow set up the company for a future revenue stream. Facebook is also making many tweaks to learn more about you to make its ads smarter.

Google+ is clean, focuses on people and content, and has found a hole in the defense of other social networks that it can drive a truck right through. Musk is living proof that Google is building a service around people, which is the smart thing to do. The company is paying attention to usage patterns and success stories like Musk’s, and putting the pedal to the metal on bringing more and more useful features to its forty million plus users.

Google+ Can Win

With tools and features that don’t take a lot of figuring out or technical knowledge to master, artists like Daria Musk can take control of their own career from A-Z. From selling music, to distribution of music, to serendipitous shared content and searches, and live concerts, Google+ is the only social network that can become a user’s “home”.

Facebook and Twitter are machines where people are small pieces of data that make up the network. Google+ on the other hand focuses on the discovery of people and content, making the people the platform. It’s a huge advantage, and its secret weapon.

If Daria Musk can build a budding music career using the Google+ platform, what can you do with it? You could share educational materials, do live art events, raise money for charity, read poetry, or whatever niche you want to build for yourself. Google+ provides tools that give you limitless capabilities.

Facebook prides itself on astronomical numbers for “time on site”, but since Google has tools like search, YouTube, Music, and now Google+, you’ll be hard-pressed to find one place where everything can come together so seamlessly.

My Laptop So Slow, What To Do!

My Laptop So Slow, What To Do!

For reasons unknown, sometimes I just cannot figure out exactly why is my laptop so slow all of a sudden. The speed turns me off big time, and it happens oftentimes. But think again, if you believe you’re the only dupe of a dawdling laptop.

article page main ehow images a06 30 4j change startup programs specific users 800x800 My Laptop So Slow, What To Do!It didn’t take me long enough to realize that technology isn’t my oyster. I was gifted a laptop computer on my birthday, and needless to say, I was exhilarated. Incognizant of the bits and nuances that the processing of these intricate devices holds, I soaked up all the goodness of my laptop – I downloaded every file I loved, I jam-packed every hard-drive that existed in my laptop with countless files and folders, and not to forget, invited computer virus with arms wide open. I deteriorated the quality myself, and ended up marveling how in the hell and why, is my laptop so slow in its performance? You know, I may not be a professional technician dishing out necessary advice on a laptop running slow as a sloth. But I can tell you, if you don’t stop flooding it with unnecessary files now, it wouldn’t be too late for you to witness your darling notebook going to the dogs. Too rude? Let the following words explain my plight better.

Laptop Computer is Slow – Causes and Troubleshooting Steps

Computer Virus

One of the most common causes of the laptop slowing down in its functional speed is a computer virus. A PC virus is an unidentified and unfamiliar program that gets into our computer and fiddles with the operating system and other software. It can leave computer applications dysfunctional or even shut down the PC. Computer viruses, malware, or spyware can do serious damage to the system, if they are not dealt with at priority.

If your laptop is slow, you need to have an antivirus program installed on your system. Purchase a good antivirus software from your nearby computer repair shop and install it on your computer. It is recommended to periodically scan for viruses on your laptop, to protect it from virus attacks. Along with scanning the hard drive for viruses, it is also suggested to run a default scan of the drives. In Windows operating system, you can do so by clicking on ‘My Computer’; right-clicking on any drive you want to check for errors; and selecting ‘Properties’, ‘Tools’, and the ‘Check Now’ option. By doing so, the system will scan the selected drive for errors and fix the errors.

Computer Registry

laptop start button My Laptop So Slow, What To Do!The Windows Registry is one of the most important sections in the laptop computer. It is responsible for storing all the related data of the operating system, as well as other crucial programs. Moreover, it also stores the changes made to the system. If the registry becomes overly full, it can substantially make the computer slow in operations. Cleaning the registry and sorting the data is the appropriate solution. Use a good registry cleaning software to sort out the data in order and remove the errors in the registry.

Full Hard Drive

The hard drive being full with data is another reason why the laptop computer might be running slow. There is no need to immediately upgrade the hard drive to one with more memory. You first need to clear up space in the hard drive, and there will automatically be sufficient space. Uninstall all programs that you do not use very often or do not use at all. Make sure that you do not delete the folders of the programs from the ‘C’ drive. This will just delete the folder, but will not uninstall the complete package of the software. Therefore, it is always better to uninstall programs.

In Windows OS, you can run the ‘disk cleanup’ utility by clicking on ‘Start’, ‘All Programs’, ‘Accessories’, ‘System Tools’, and then ‘Disk Cleanup’. For arranging the data in order on the hard drive, you would need to defragment the hard disk at periodic intervals. Both the ‘disk cleanup’ and the ‘disk defragmenter’ tools are very important for clearing unnecessary data and sorting out the data properly. Keeping a lot of short-cuts on your desktop will also make the laptop operation slow.

Less RAM

If the hard disk is full with programs that require a considerable amount of memory, your RAM is what needs to be upgraded. Upgrading the RAM is probably the best step that can be taken in speeding up the laptop computer performance. Adding RAM to the computer is a very simple process. You just have to remove the cover of the cabinet, remove the old RAMs from their slots, and put in the new higher-memory RAMs.

Other Causes and Troubleshooting Steps

If there are many programs that are set to run automatically when the computer boots up, your laptop can be slow at startup. For faster booting of the operating system, you need to limit the startup applications. If you are using Windows Vista, you can do so by clicking on ‘Start’, typing in ‘msconfig’ in the ‘Start Search’ portion, selecting ‘Startup’, and unchecking the unnecessary files that run when the PC boots. Other alternative to make the computer run faster is to clear off the temporary files from the ‘Temp’ folder in the ‘C’ drive.

Apple’s winning strategy: Lower prices | Technology News

Apple’s winning strategy: Lower prices | Technology News

apple logo Apples winning strategy: Lower prices | Technology News

In the past, Apple had always been seen as a company selling niche, high-quality products at high prices. In recent years, however, it’s captured business by keeping costs more competitive.

The company’s lower price strategy applies not just to its iPhone and iPad products, but also to the MacBook Air–all have been able to meet or beat the prices offered by some of its rivals, according to an analysis in yesterday’s New York Times. But Apple also keeps its own internal costs down by locking in prices on huge amounts of hardware components through multi-year deals with manufacturers.

Looking at the iPhone 4S, Apple sells the entry level 16 gigabyte model for $199. That price comes in lower than some of the popular Android handsets, such as Motorola’s Droid Bionic ($299 through Verizon Wireless), the cost drops to $199 if you shell out $50 for a data plan.

The Times also noted that the Samsung Galaxy S II sells through T-Mobile for $230, though it’s available through AT&T for $199, while the HTC Amaze 4G costs $260 through T-Mobile, but it can also be had from such retailers at Amazon for $199.

However, smartphone consumers who don’t want to choose an expensive data plan, switch carriers, or check Amazon for better deals could easily see the iPhone as the best option based in part on price.

Then there’s the iPad.

The first crop of Android tablets that hit the market failed to come close to the iPad’s entry-level price of $499, with the Times specifically pointing to the Motorola Xoom, which was priced at $800 off contract. The failure of Android tablet makers to compete on price or quality gave Apple the opportunity to corner the market.

Now, of course, rival tablet makers have finally caught on and are quickly introducing models that match or beat the iPad on price. Amazon may present the biggest challenge when it launches its $199 Kindle Fire next month. But even though the iPad’s share of the tablet market has dipped over the past several months, Apple isexpected to hang on to its leading share at least over the next several years.

Even Apple’s traditionally high-priced laptops have seen their prices chopped. In July, the company tweaked its MacBook Air and cut the entry-level prices to $999 for the 11-inch model and $1,299 for the 13-inch edition.

Finally, Apple’s own costs are kept in check, noted the Times, as the company uses its hefty war chest to stock up on large quantities of flash memory and other components. This puts its rivals in a difficult position as they then have to pay higher prices for the small amount of memory left in the marketplace.

Yankee Group analyst Carl Howe told that the pricing strategy shows current CEO Tim Cook’s hand at work, as he had been running the supply chain for 13 years.

“This is not a new thing,” Howe said. “They started this process in 2005 when they prepaid $1.25 billion for flash memory. It was an unheard of deal at the time that they would pay in advance for access to a large amount of flash.”

Howe added that it’s the type of strategy that a company like Apple, which has a ten-year horizon, can pull off. But companies operating quarter to quarter “don’t have a chance.”
